Abstract Figurative Portraits on Paper

Between Faces explores identity as flexible and layered, through intuitive line work and expressive color.

A series of abstract figurative portraits created using charcoal and oil sticks on fine art paper.

The Between Faces series emerged three years after my debut, Subconscious Lines. After a long inner battle and a longing for more substance than lines alone I began experimenting with new materials. Eventually, I discovered oil sticks, and they became the foundation for this entire series.

I was drawn to color as a way to give the paintings greater weight and depth. It was there that blind drawing and color came together. Blind drawing continued to give me the most intriguing lines and shapes that my consciousness never could. My task was simply to define them and give them emotional resonance through color.

This series left me with the sense that I am finally getting closer to what people call “my voice”—a more authentic painting style that feels like my own.

Although intuitive in nature, the shifting human faces and abstract shapes in the work bring a psychological twist, exploring social and personal identity, inviting viewers to find their own reflections in the spaces between the faces.

“Between Faces”

Blends blind drawing with rich oil stick color, exploring the tension between subconscious line work and the social and personal dimensions of human identity. The series marks a shift toward a deeper psychological expression in my artwork.
